It happens with all three of those Perl versions?

Hmm.  What exactly is running in batch here and how does it manage to keep 
going after it aborts?

Possibly.  The only thing you've got that I haven't built sucessfully with 
is VMS 7.3-1 as I haven't gotten my hands on a kit yet.  Anyone else built 
Perl under 7.3-1?
