[PATCH?] default char type

[PATCH?] default char type

The default chartype (e.g. for string constants in PBC) is currently 
unicode with utf32 encoding.
Can someone comment on this?
In some debug sessions I saw a lot of string_compare -> string_transcode 
   cased by this default.
