We don't have any obscure systems here.  It looks pretty much OK.

The only comment I'd make is that the boxes aren't all the same size,
those on the left are significantly narrower than those on the right.
It's ugly but I guess it isn't important.

If I insert a space before 'a', 'c' and 'e' in the source, the boxes
are then all rendered the same width which is much more pleasing.

If I add a third column, the boxes in the third column are rendered
the same width as those in the second (with or without a space added
before 'a', 'c' and 'e').

$ nroff -v
GNU nroff (groff) version 1.22.4
