They don't have a special meaning, but they're as un-free to use
for future use as $i. Since they have no special meaning, they
can act as normal [1] variables -- and just taking them to be
used for anything specific would require deprecation.
Might as well do it now.
[1] Assuming that punctuation variables can ever be "normal".
