DAVEM TPF grant#2 report #142

I spent the week trying to work out when one should use pad_free(),
pad_swipe(), S_op_clear_gv() or just plain SvREFCNT_dec().

Turns out its more complex that one could possibly imagine. I'm still
undecided as to whether to sort out the mess or let sleeping dogs lie.
