I love seeing people jumping forward to find solutions (though I wish it
had happened after the original breakage).

The proposals are not 11th hour fixes.  They are 1-minute-to-midnight fixes.

I strongly urge that any core changes be deferred until 5.25 and backported
later if successful and possible (which I think is what Nicholas is
suggesting).
