The commit message begins:

    t/TEST: add -w to shebang, fix a used-once warning
    Adding -w should be ok, despite peculiar code style; it avoids
    require, unlike "use strict".

We do string interpolation all over the place with potentially unde-
fined values.  The 'peculiar' code style precludes the obvious // and
//=.  Making the code more complex just for the sake of -w seems like
wasted effort.  Any objections if I just remove -w?
