So, this was actually a brand new directory - I'd started by doing a
git clone of blead to a new directory, doing a git apply of my old
patches, and running ./Configure -Dusedevel -DDEBUGGING -des; make -j
8.  This is on a CentOS 6.4 fairly fresh install.  (I tried with and
without threads and couldn't reproduce).
