Usually bless dies if the second argument is a reference.

$ perl -e 'bless [], \1; print "ok\n"'
Attempt to bless into a reference at -e line 1.

But not if it is tied:

sub TIESCALAR { bless [] }
sub FETCH { [] }
tie $t, "";
print bless({}, $t), "\n";
__END__
ARRAY(0x7fc81b82e728)=HASH(0x7fc81b82e680)

or otherwise magical....

$ ./perl -Ilib -le 'tell STDOUT; print bless [], ${^LAST_FH};'
GLOB(0x7f955302e9f8)=ARRAY(0x7f9553006100)

$ perl5.10 -le '$/ = \1; print bless [], $/'
SCALAR(0x7fab0982c1b0)=ARRAY(0x7fab098070e8)

So we have an inconsistency here.
