A suggestion:

Upgrade cv_flags_t from 16 to 32 bits. It's main use is in a struct
otherwise filled with pointers, which means on 32-bit architectures
its almost certainly aligned to a 32 bit boundary anyway.

At least, that's my understanding - if I'm missing anything, C
experts, please correct me.
