Good criterion. Will remember that if I ever need to hire a landshark

Running it as pure Perl should be no problem, because all the XS is
optional, with runtime detection of failure to load the XS. That logic
was actually already in place, so this aspect of the module shouldn't
be expected to make things more interesting.

And because Cwd is used really early in the build process, with
special-case logic to make it available earlier than other modules
required for build. That's an issue that I hadn't considered.
