I could not find the ticket in response to which f041cf0f9c64 was written. I've updated the subject of this ticket. What we want is to fix the fallback of += without making it use the rhs's overloading. Rather than fix one bug and introduce a new one, the reversion leaves us with the same bug count — but the bug we knew about.
