Nonsense.  That thinking is a perfect example of survivorship bias (only reversed).

Plenty of organizations/products have successfully "reinvented" their image through strategic messaging and marketing.  And plenty of organizations/products have also failed at it.

But all those organizations/products did it because they felt they were headed in the wrong direction.  Some would eventually fail even if they did not try to turn the ship around.

So we tend to forget about the good reinventions because they are still with us.  We only remember the bad ones because we need to explain their absence.

Also, correlation does not equate to causation.
