If you do this I will commit it and fight with all the naysayers later.

That said, the tutorial should at least _mention_ the two arg form and 
point people to comprehensive docs on the subject.

I think the perlootut docs are a good model. Focus on concepts and best 
practices, and point to the reference docs. Then make sure that the 
reference documentation is comprehensive.
