I must here declare myself as someone who does not for a moment
subscribe to the general view that a willingness to perform oneself
is detrimental to the dignity of experimental philosophy. There is,
after all, a clear distinction between labour carried out for
financial reward, and that done for the improvement of mankind: to
put it another way, Lower as a philosopher was fully my equal even
if he fell away when he became the practising physician. I think
ridiculous of certain professors of anatomy, who find it beneath
them to pick up the knife themselves, but merely comment while hired
hands do the cutting. Sylvius would never have dreamt of sitting on
a dais reading from an authority while others cut -- when he taught,
the knife was in his hand and the blood spattered his coat. Boyle
also did not scruple to perform his own experiments and, on one
occasion in my presence, even showed himself willing to anatomise a
rat with his very own hands. Nor was he less a gentleman when he had
finished. Indeed, in my opinion, his stature was all the greater,
for in Boyle wealth, humility and curiosity mingled, and the world
  is richer for it.

We are inordinately gratified to announce Perl 5.17.8, the ninth
development release of Perl 5.17.

You will soon be able to download Perl 5.17.8 from your favorite CPAN
mirror or find it at:

https://metacpan.org/release/ARC/perl-5.17.8/

SHA1 digests for this release are:

 8e82d1993e82f2529b446434df4c7d4973876127 perl-5.17.8.tar.gz
 171516a18e5b254e9ccf08755e301442100dfbe7 perl-5.17.8.tar.bz2

You can find a full list of changes in the file "perldelta.pod" located
in the "pod" directory inside the release and on the web.

Perl 5.17.8 represents approximately 5 weeks of development since Perl
5.17.7 and contains approximately 18,000 lines of changes across 280
files from 24 authors.

Perl continues to flourish into its third decade thanks to a vibrant
community of users and developers. The following people are known to
have contributed the improvements that became Perl 5.17.8:

Aaron Crane, Andy Dougherty, Augustina Blair, Chris 'BinGOs' Williams,
Craig A. Berry, Daniel Dragan, Dave Rolsky, David Mitchell, Eric Brine,
Father Chrysostomos, H.Merijn Brand, James E Keenan, Jerry D. Hedden,
Jesse Luehrs, Karl Williamson, Matthew Horsfall, Nicholas Clark, Renee
Baecker, Ricardo Signes, Shlomi Fish, Steffen Müller, Steve Hay, Steven
Schubiger, Tony Cook.

The list above is almost certainly incomplete as it is automatically
generated from version control history. In particular, it does not
include the names of the (very much appreciated) contributors who
reported issues to the Perl bug tracker.

Many of the changes included in this version originated in the CPAN
modules included in Perl's core. We're grateful to the entire CPAN
community for helping Perl to flourish.

For a more complete list of all of Perl's historical contributors,
please see the F<AUTHORS> file in the Perl source distribution.

We expect to release Perl 5.17.9 on 2013-02-20. The next major stable
release of Perl 5, version 5.18.0, should appear in May 2013.
