You don’t want to increase contrast too far either. Very dark grey on off-white is considerably easier to read than full black on full white. It’ll be considered “black on white” by most people so this is mostly technical nitpicking, but the seemingly subtle difference in colour can be enormous in contrast. (As an irrelevant aside, it’s been found [1] that dark green on light yellow is by far the most readable colouring for text.)
