This is a bug report for perl from james_avera@yahoo.com,
generated with the help of perlbug 1.39 running under perl 5.14.2.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
#!/usr/bin/perl
#
# This may or may not be a bug, but AFAIK it is undocumented behavior.
#
# If a Fully Qualified typeglob of the form *Package::Var is assigned
# from a ref, it still matters what package the assignment statement was
# coded in.
#
# The resulting new variable can not be referenced under use strict 'vars'
# IFF the glob assignment was performed by code in package 'Package'.
# If the glob assignment was done by any other package (e.g. Exporter::Heavy)
# then this problem does not appear.
#
# I discovered this while debugging an app which uses dynamically created
# variable names to map to database fields.
#
BEGIN { package Pkg; our $orig = 123; }

# This works, but change 'bogus' to 'main' and the following eval fails.
my $tmp = \$Pkg::orig;
{ package bogus; *main::xxx = $tmp };

use strict 'vars';
eval('print "xxx=$xxx\n"'); die "eval err: $@ " if $@;
