Lost Data::Dumper-5.8 compatibility

I recently released a new dev version of Data::Dumper. That version lost
5.8.9 compatibility. Given the rather low level of D::D in the
toolchain, I'd really rather keep it working on 5.8.1 and up (or so) for
some time. Does somebody have an idea what could have caused this?

Are we just testing for the non-existence of a bug that was fixed in
core outside of Data::Dumper? Should we only run the test if perl is
5.10 or better? Is the test bogus? Is it a real DD code change that
breaks stuff on 5.8?

Cheers,
Steffen
