Notice how I get a warning before the error (the error itself being in error, but that’s a different bug, #105924):

$ perl5.15.5 -cwe 'require a::b + 1'
Warning: Use of "require" without parentheses is ambiguous at -e line 1.
syntax error at -e line 1, near "require a::b +"
-e had compilation errors.

But if I use . instead of + the warning goes away:

$ perl5.15.5 -cwe 'require a::b . 1'
-e syntax OK

unless I’m using 5.10 or earlier:

$ perl5.10.1 -cwe 'require a::b . 1'
Warning: Use of "require" without parentheses is ambiguous at -e line 1.
-e syntax OK
$ perl5.6.2 -cwe 'require a::b . 1'
Warning: Use of "require" without parens is ambiguous at -e line 1.
-e syntax OK
