I don’t really know what to tell you, but is there a possibility it is
running under a different version of Perl?

Or maybe it has to do with whether it is attached to a Terminal.  If you
do fork() and POSIX::setsid() first, does it fail when run directly?  If
so, it’s probably a Net::SSH::Expect bug.

Have you reported this against Net::SSH::Expect?
