Code for converting $^X to an absolute path on OS X and FreeBSD is now in
a branch smoke-me/abs-caret-X

The enhanced Porting/checkcfgvar.pl is finished and merged to blead.
It can now generate default entries in all the config.sh style files.
It can also now generate TAP output, and is run as part of the regression
tests, to ensure that the config.sh-style files don't get out of date.

I still haven't actually managed to get back to the original planned task for
a fortnight ago on Monday, which was testing Cwd on earlier Perl versions.
