It wasn't choking on "what it considered invalid versions"; it was 
choking on total garbage.  $VERSION has been defined in the Perl docs 
and the core code since the dawn of time as a number.  That's it.  No 
"3crap" stuff.  A number.  With 5.6.0, the concept of number was 
extended to v-strings (badly).
