The third and last of my OSCON talks now has its slides available: π« Unicode Support Shootout: π The Good, the Bad, & the (mostly) Ugly π The POD is the plaintext source; the Javascript-driven HTML slideshow looks the nicest provided you have Garamond and Symbola installed; and the PDF is for printing so you donβt have to worry about fonts. POD: http://training.perl.com/OSCON2011/gbu/gbu.pod HTML: http://training.perl.com/OSCON2011/gbu/index.html PDF: http://training.perl.com/OSCON2011/gbu/gbu.pdf There are slideshow controls hidden down in the bottom right of the slideshow. Hover and they'll appear. This is a hottie: I'll be burning through a slide a minute. Maybe that way they won't follow me well enough to want to shoot me when I deliver all the bad and ugly news. :) *Not* a pretty picture, especially for the webby languages. * Perl wins by a landslide: just look at slides 5&6 and you'll see that right away. * Java comes in (a rather distant) second. * The other 4 (or 7) are so plagued by various inherent design flaws that I really don't know how they'll ever overcome them. They are not suitable for even the most basic of Unicode work, per The Unicode Standard. Corrections welcome. --tomThread Next
