Making it default would be exporting all the current problems from
Windows to Unix, as you can't read binary files with it reliably.
That's definitely a no-go.

What I mean is that one can use this on Windows (or even Unix if one
might have to deal with files from Windows) and be sure you can open
text files in a reliable way, even if the default changes in the
future.
