[PATCH] add stray save_* functions to the API

Attached patch marks as API the couple of save_* functions that are not
already in the API.  Actual use of them is through the SAVE* macros,
of course, not save_*.  I don't see any reason why any of the save stack
facilities should be excluded from the API.
