I tried by hand.  Apart from Configure saying "/bin/less -R" doesn't 
exist (I had to change it to /bin/less), configure did not fail.

Make worked; however make test failed:

I suspect that there may also be a problem with Test::Smoke than with 
Perl.  I'll file a bug report there.
