I pushed the following branch so that it could be tested for
suitability for maint-5.12

I would have already merged it except for the fact that Florian has
encountered problems with make test on it.

When i build with the same options as him I get no fails.

The difference between our setups:

Linux bagnost 2.6.32-24-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP Thu Aug 19 01:12:52 UTC
2010 i686 GNU/Linux

versus:

Linux tardis 2.6.35.2 #2 SMP Mon Aug 16 01:51:51 CEST 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Could we get some additional tests done by folks on x86_64 please?

Im really surprised by this by the way, the bug is fairly simple, and
IMO should Just Work on Perl 5.12 (with suitable conflict resolution)
so I am at a loss what the story is.

Since this bug results in fatal run time errors Im of the opinion it
really deserves to be back ported. But i wont merge until I hear some
positive results from x86_64 testers...

cheers
Yves
