This thread has grown counter-productive. Obviously, there is more than one way to do it. There are even reasonable people who disagree about which ones are awful. Can we just move forward with changes to which there are not very loud objections? For example, I bet almost everyone will favor using three-arg open except when documenting two-arg open. Maybe there will be a general consensus that "for my $x" is better than "for $x" and that can be updated as well. Having a mostly-consistent bracing and indenting style also seems like a good win. If it takes more than a few messages to find a common ground for something (like 'and' versus '&&') maybe it's best to leave the docs as they are on that point so progress can be made on others.
