My apologies, you are quite right.  The proposal of removing autodie had

Agreed.  I'll save this for a separate message, not least because despite
being a heavy user of such an API, I haven't given much thought into what it
would actually look like.  At the very least, we need a way of saying "at
the end of this lexical scope (at compile time), run this".
