At the risk of tainting the concept by agreeing with it, "so start
publishing patches" is my take on the discussion as well.
Many community-driven projects (well, at least the ones by Daniel
Bernstein that he now touches as little as possible; also the Linux
kernel) have a culture of releases augmented by a smorgasbord of
patches that offer some feature or other.
(Refraining from suggesting a bunch of steps I have no intention of
doing myself at this point.)
