This is pretty much how it does look rendered by man (except that in the 
groff source the two ticks are backticks as far as I can see). As I tried to 
explain before, it's just a bit confusing, because it looks as though 
something could be missing from between the quotes, since one normally sees 
"a plain 'a'" or similar.

Doesn't matter, it's the clarity of the documentation that's at issue here.
