But what changed to make this break? I have no idea. At first I thought
that it might be ExtUtils::Command from 1.14 to 1.15:

But that's not in 5.8.x, and Steve's smoker has just emitted a clean (dirty?)
sweep of 'M's for 5.8.x, so it can't be that. I'm confused.
