Either coLinux or these prepackaged linux images 
http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/vmware/ might help.
valgrind is just too good to miss.

On Gentoo.2007.0 I have icc (the intel c++ compiler) and llvm-2.1.
OpenSolaris (for dtrace) doesn't run for me now.
On freebsd I have dtrace, I believe.
