I was able to duplicate Jeff's problem on two versions of perl:

perl, v5.8.8 built for darwin-2level

semi-panic: attempt to dup freed string at -e line 2.
Bus error

perl, v5.10.0 built for i686-linux

semi-panic: attempt to dup freed string at -e line 2.
Segmentation fault
