Smoke test reporting too many tests

With Change 31262 (which upgraded threads::shared to 1.12),
the test file:
    ext/threads/shared/t/waithires.t
only has 57 tests:

    BEGIN {
        $| = 1;
        print("1..57\n");   ### Number of tests that will be run ###
    };

However, the smoke test report:

How can it be reporting 75 tests?  Or in the last case,
expecting 33 and seeing 63?

Is this a bug in the smoke test code?
