A script I wrote crashed with the following error:

Wide character in send at /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/i686-linux/IO/Socket.pm
ine 218.

The wide character in question was — which was from slashdot's rss
feed.

rss was being retrieved with XML::RSS::Feed

The script was running in perl 5.8.8

I don't know what other details you need.
