I think the Perl 6 effort would benefit from a name change. Just as Perl had its roots in awk / grep / shell scripting. But it was not called "awkgrepshell++" or anything like that, it was called "Perl". "Perl 6" has its roots in Perl 5 / Lisp / Smalltalk and whatnot, so why not give it another name? Personally, I think "Onion" would be a good candidate, because it in a way expresses its roots, and it expresses the multi-layered aspect of the language. The name change could be exploited for PR purposes, and could also be used to attract more mind power outside of the Perl community. And it would be an incentive on its own, because you could start out right now with version 0.1 of Onion. And everbody would realize it's a work in progress. And that it *is* a departure from what most of the world knows as "Perl". Larry stated in his last State of the Onion that Perl was becoming an adult. It's not too uncommon for people to change their given name once they've grown up. And by using the name "Onion", we even wouldn't have to change the "State of the Onion"'s title ;-) LizThread Previous | Thread Next
