But if you hold my e-mail up at an angle, you will see my actual point, 
in that while there is no way to update old installers, if you update 
existing installers, there is no reason to maintain a middle ground 
(your #2).  In one swell foop, we tunnel directly from ground state 1 to 
exited state 3, with the same amount of energy required to move to state 2.
