I think the speed is not a problem, even on wince.

IMO improving speed is the matter of quality of code, and it is very nice to see that many patches were on p5p for this.
But running speed is very rarely a problem.

may be implement a make target?
  make benchmark
so it will summarize some predetermined benchmark tests.
