In pp_sys.c there is this idiom

    PUSHs(sv = sv_mortalcopy(&PL_sv_no));

which seems to date back to times immortal (5.003 being the earliest I can
currently grab, and it has

    PUSHs(sv = sv_mortalcopy(&sv_no));

)


Why?
And can't it be replaced with PUSHs(sv = sv_newmortal()) ?
