You can certainly do that, and I would argue that you will have to do 
that before M::B is accepted into the core.  But I just want to make 
sure that everyone understands (I know you do Ken) that it is only the 
presence of a line that /looks/ like a $VERSION assignment that caused 
problems in M::B::Base.

As is version.pm... ;)

I know, you don't want an external dependency, and especially one with 
an XS component.  I'd like to work around that with you...
