Have similar experience with my satellite receiver, having PPC processor also equipped with HDD, ethernet, so on. Earlier I tried do some cross-compilation, and succeeded some, but then I discovered it is able to run just RedHat binaries for PPC (and probably some other) so now I am happy with Perl, GCC, and other cool stuff inside my receiver, and now it just able to build Perl by itself.
