This is a bug report for perl from,
generated with the help of perlbug 1.34 running under perl v5.8.1.

[Please enter your report here]

$ ~/Reference/5.8.0/bin/perl5.8.0-32 -wle '$^U = 3'
$ ~/Reference/5.8.1/bin/perl5.8.1-32 -wle '$^U = 3'
Modification of a read-only value attempted at -e line 1.

The unused punctuation variable $^U appears to have become inadvertently
made read only by this change:

I propose to fix this as part of a general refactoring of gv_fetchpv
