When I started university, we also got introduced to programming, and
programming languages. Our professor taught us that programming languages
used symbols (or keywords), that sometimes looked like English words,
but that was purely a coincidence - they weren't, and one shouldn't
derive the function of a keyword from the meaning of an English word
that looked like it.

I think that was a valuable lessons. I always think of the 'tr' operator
as the 'tee-ar operator'.
