This is a bug report for perl from turner@mikomi.org,
generated with the help of perlbug 1.34 running under perl v5.8.1.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

You can reproduce the bug with the following:

perl -e '$#[{}]{1}'

It will malloc an unreasonable amount of memory (looks to be about 500
megs).

I can reproduce it on Debian Unstable (with the version of Perl reported
below), Debian Stable (Perl 5.6.1), RedHat 9 (Perl 5.8.0) and Mac OS X 10.3
(Perl 5.8.1-RC3).

ltrace with Perl 5.8.1 (Debian Unstable):
malloc(542600964) = 0x40221008

ltrace with Perl 5.6.1 (Debian Stable):
malloc(540901812) = 0x40187008

I was unable to get useful traces on RedHat 9 and Mac OS X. I suspect that
this is because they both ship with useithreads and Debian does not.
