This is a bug report for perl from karsten.sperling@stud.uni-karlsruhe.de,
generated with the help of perlbug 1.34 running under perl v5.8.0.

When copying a value that contains "\0" into $\,
the string is truncated at that position.

$ perl -e '$\="foo\0bar"; syswrite(STDOUT, length($\)."\n")'                       
3

With 5.6.1, the code prints "7" as expected.
