The changes of 5.8.2 are recorded in perldelta.pod. When 5.8.3 comes out,
this file will be moved to perl582delta.pod, and a new perldelta.pod
will be made, which later will be name perl583delta.pod, etc.
However, it's sometimes convenient if you can point people to a
specific document; that is if you want to point to the document
documenting a new feature/bugfix/whatever of 5.8.2 you can point
to "perl582delta.pod". If 5.8.2 comes out, you'd have to say "look
in perldelta.pod". This is fine, but in a few months, when 5.8.3
is out, there will be a perldelta.pod, but the feature you point
is not documented there, but in perl582delta.pod.
Since discussions are stored for a long time (and searched too) by
google, perlmonks and mailinglist archives, it would be a good thing
if you can point to a document whose name isn't about to chance.
Adding this feature requires nothing more than a symbolic link
in the pod directory.
And of course, where I used version numbers of the maint branch,
this is true for blead as well (and 5.6.x too).
