I have reverted this change. I'll reconsider it for 5.8.3.
I don't wish to add bug fixes to 5.8.2 that stand a non-negligible
chance of causing breakage by exposing other people's bugs.

I have reverted this change. I'll reconsider an improved version
for 5.8.3.
Both remain in blead. (until/unless Hugo says otherwise)
