This is a bug report for perl from sanjoy@mrao.cam.ac.uk,
generated with the help of perlbug 1.33 running under perl v5.6.1.

This one-line script, when syntax checked, causes a segfault:

% perl -c -e '(OUT, $tempfile) = tempfile();'
Segmentation fault

Running Linux 2.4.9 (RH 7.1), Pentium whatever

I don't claim it's a beautiful script, or even a correct one!
However, syntax checking should (almost?) never segfault.
