This is a bug report for perl from asanto1@gl.umbc.edu,
generated with the help of perlbug 1.34 running under perl v5.8.0.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
[Please enter your report here]

Running on RH8 fully patched with latest versions of both perl and lwp. This
bug has also been seen in the following location which implies that it might be
a core perl bug as opposed to interaction between lwp and perl:

http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/Perl_support_problems.html

During any attempt to use the LWP api ( even with simple code like the following
 ):

         use LWP::UserAgent;
         $ua = LWP::UserAgent->new;
         $ua->agent("MyApp/0.1 ");

Will cause this error:

Unrecognized character \xE2 at start.pl line 3.
